Attend Live or Virtually

2-Day Hands-On Training Seminar
December 10 - 11, 2020
9:00AM – 5:00PM PST
Level: Intermediate

Do you have existing WinForms or WPF Applications that you are maintaining? Do you need to build new client-centric applications? Is all of the focus and hype surrounding ASP.NET Core, Angular, Vue.js, (fill in some other name of a web-based UI framework here) making you feel left out and left behind? The really good news is that WinForms and WPF are *far* from dead. In fact, they are moving forward with the rest of the Microsoft development eco-system, and are full members of .NET Core 3 (and beyond).

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn about migrating existing WinForms and WPF applications to their .NET Core versions, as well as how to use an ASP.NET Core web service to build new WinForms and WPF applications.

You will learn:

  • Entity Framework Core
  • ASP.Net Core Services
  • Windows Presentation Foundation

Attendee Requirements:

  • You must provide your own Windows (or Windows capable Mac) laptop computer for this hands-on lab.
  • You will need to have Visual Studio 2019 version 16.4+ installed (any edition). Visual Studio 2019 16.4+ Community Edition can be downloaded from  When installing, make sure to select the "ASP.NET and web development", ".NET desktop development" and ".NET Core cross-platform development" workloads.
  • You will need to install the x64 versions of the SDK and Runtime (3.1.100+).  They can be downloaded from Confirm the install by opening a command prompt, enter "dotnet --version" (without the quotes) - you should see 3.1.100 (or greater). Note: The trailing zeros (0) are required. Confirm the runtime by typing "dotnet --list-runtimes" (without the quotes) and look for "3.1.0" (or greater).
  • You also will need to have SQL Server Express 2016 or later. Visual Studio 2019 installs SQL Server Express LocalDb by default, and this is perfect for this HOL. If you need to install SQL Server Express you can install from here:
  • Optionally, install SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) installed. SSMS can be installed from the SQL Server 2016 Express installer, located here:
